Yes, a VPN almost always costs you some speed. Your traffic has to be encrypted, and it takes a detour through the VPN company's server before it reaches the website or app you asked for. Extra work plus extra distance means the connection cannot be quite as fast as it was without the VPN.
What matters is how much you lose. On a healthy home connection, with a well-run VPN and a nearby server, the drop is usually small enough that browsing, streaming, and video calls feel the same as before. On a bad setup, the same VPN can slow things enough to cause buffering, laggy calls, and downloads that crawl. The difference almost always comes down to a handful of choices you control.

Where the slowdown comes from
A VPN changes two things about how your data travels, and each change has a cost.
The first is encryption. Every piece of data leaving your device is wrapped in an encrypted tunnel, and everything coming back is unwrapped. That takes processing power. On any reasonably modern phone or computer this work is quick and handled partly by dedicated hardware, so encryption by itself is rarely why a VPN feels slow.
The second is the detour. Without a VPN, your traffic takes a fairly direct route from your internet provider to the website. With a VPN, it goes to the VPN server first, then on to the destination, and every reply retraces the same path. If that server sits in a nearby city, the detour is short. If it sits on another continent, every request crosses an ocean twice.
It also helps to know that "slow" means two different things. Bandwidth is how much data moves per second. It controls download speed and how sharp your streams look. Latency, usually shown as ping, is how long one round trip takes. It controls how snappy everything feels: page loads, online games, video calls. A distant server mostly hurts latency. An overcrowded server mostly hurts bandwidth. Knowing which one you are losing points you straight at the fix.
The four things that decide how much you lose
- Distance to the server. This is the biggest factor for most people. A server in your own region adds a barely noticeable delay. A server halfway around the world adds a delay you can feel on every click. Only connect to a faraway country when you actually need to appear there.
- Server load. A VPN server is a computer with finite capacity, shared by everyone connected to it. Popular locations get crowded during peak evening hours, and free services are crowded around the clock. Switching to a less obvious city nearby often helps more than anything else.
- The protocol. The protocol is the method your app uses to build the encrypted tunnel. WireGuard is the modern option and is noticeably quicker on most connections. OpenVPN is older and heavier, and running it over TCP is the slowest common combination. Most apps let you change this in settings.
- Your starting speed. A VPN can only work with the connection it is given. On fast home fiber you have speed to spare, and the loss disappears into the surplus. On weak hotel Wi-Fi, the same overhead lands on a connection that was already struggling.
When a VPN can actually speed things up
There is one common situation where a VPN makes your connection faster, not slower. Some internet providers deliberately slow specific kinds of traffic, a practice called throttling. Video streaming and large downloads are the usual targets, especially at busy times of day.
A VPN encrypts your traffic, so your provider can no longer see what kind of traffic it is. If streaming was being singled out, the throttling rule no longer matches, and your stream runs at full speed. The telltale sign is video that stutters every evening while a plain speed test still shows fast numbers. If turning the VPN on makes streaming suddenly smooth, throttling is the likely explanation.
Treat this as a pleasant exception, though. A VPN is a privacy tool, not a speed upgrade, and nobody should buy one expecting faster internet.
How to test it on your own connection
Guessing is unnecessary. A few minutes of testing tells you exactly what your VPN costs.
- Turn the VPN off and run a speed test in your browser. Write down three numbers: download, upload, and ping.
- Connect to the nearest VPN server and run the same test on the same site. Compare all three numbers, not just download.
- Then connect to the server you actually use day to day, if it is different, and test once more. This shows what your real setup costs you.

Expect the nearby-server test to show a modest dip in download speed and a small rise in ping. That is normal and harmless. A drop that cuts your connection to a fraction of its usual speed, on a server close to home, means something specific is wrong, and the next section is for you.
How to fix a slow VPN
Work through these in order. The first two resolve the majority of complaints.
- Pick a closer server. Or use the app's automatic option, usually labeled Fastest, Recommended, or Quick Connect, which weighs distance and load for you.
- Change the protocol. Open the VPN app's settings and look for Protocol, often under Connection or General. Choose WireGuard if it is offered, or the provider's own modern equivalent. If only OpenVPN is available, pick UDP rather than TCP.
- Turn off double-hop features. Settings named Double VPN or Multi-hop route your traffic through two servers for extra privacy, which lengthens the detour considerably. Leave them off unless you have a specific reason to need them.
- Rule out your Wi-Fi. Test while standing next to the router, or over a network cable if you can. A weak wireless signal is often the true bottleneck, and the VPN just takes the blame.
- Use split tunneling for traffic that does not need protection. Most apps have a Split Tunneling section in settings that lets chosen apps skip the tunnel. Sending a huge game download around the VPN keeps your protected traffic fast. Anything you exclude loses the VPN's protection, so choose deliberately.
- Reconnect, then switch servers. A connection that was fast yesterday and is slow today usually means the server is having a bad day. One click over to a neighboring city solves it.
- Be careful running the VPN on your router. It protects every device at once, but a home router has a modest processor, and handling the encryption there can cap speed for the whole house. For heavy downloads, run the VPN app on the device itself.
When slowness is a warning sign
Sometimes slow speed is not a settings problem. It is the product telling you something.
Free VPNs are slow by design more often than by accident. Crowded servers, deliberate speed caps, and daily data limits all push you toward the paid tier. Worse, some free services cover their costs by logging and selling your browsing activity, which is precisely what a VPN is supposed to prevent. A tool that is both free and painfully slow deserves a hard look before it deserves your traffic.
With a paid VPN, slowness on every server, at every time of day, after you have tried the fixes above, is worth a message to support. A good provider will help you troubleshoot. Do you have to leave it on all the time?

- Switch to the nearest server, or the app's Fastest option.

- Turn off Double VPN or Multi-hop if it is enabled.
- Retest next to the router to rule out weak Wi-Fi.
