Safe Online Banking Tips

Use Your Bank's Official App

The safest way to access your bank account on your phone is through the official app downloaded from your phone's app store. Official apps are designed with security in mind and are regularly updated. Avoid accessing your bank through links in emails or text messages. Always open the app directly or type the bank's web address into your browser.

Avoid Banking on Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks at coffee shops, airports, and hotels are convenient, but they are not secure. Other people on the same network could potentially intercept your data. If you need to check your bank account while out, use your phone's cellular connection instead. If you must use public Wi-Fi, connect through a VPN first.

Recognizing Fake Banking Emails

Scammers frequently send emails that look like they come from your bank. These emails often:

  • Claim there is suspicious activity on your account.
  • Ask you to verify your identity by clicking a link.
  • Use urgent language like "immediate action required" or "your account will be suspended."
  • Come from email addresses that look similar to your bank's but are slightly different.

Your bank will never ask you to share your password or PIN through email. If you receive a suspicious email, call your bank using the number on the back of your card, not the number in the email.

Enable Transaction Alerts

Most banks allow you to set up notifications for every transaction on your account. You can usually choose to receive alerts by text, email, or push notification. These alerts let you spot unauthorized charges quickly, giving you time to report them before the problem grows.

Strengthen Your Login

Protect your banking accounts with these steps:

  • Use a strong, unique password that you do not use anywhere else.
  • Enable two-factor authentication so logging in requires both your password and a code from your phone.
  • Use biometric login (fingerprint or face recognition) if your bank's app supports it.

Monitor Regularly

Make a habit of checking your bank statements and transaction history at least once a week. The sooner you notice something unusual, the faster you can act. Most banks have strong fraud protection, but early reporting makes the process smoother and faster.
