Your Browser's Default Settings May Not Protect You
Most web browsers come with settings that prioritize convenience over privacy. This means websites can track your activity across the internet, build a profile of your interests, and share that information with advertisers, all without you realizing it. The good news is that changing a few settings can significantly reduce this tracking.
Disable Third-Party Cookies
Cookies are small files that websites store on your computer. First-party cookies help sites remember your login or shopping cart, which is useful. Third-party cookies, however, are placed by advertisers and trackers to follow you from site to site. Blocking them is one of the most effective privacy steps you can take.
In most browsers, go to Settings, then Privacy or Cookies, and look for an option to block third-party cookies. Some browsers now block them by default.
Enable "Do Not Track"
Most browsers have a "Do Not Track" setting that sends a polite request to websites asking them not to track you. While not all websites honor this request, enabling it takes just a few seconds and has no downside. Look for it in your browser's privacy settings.
Use Your Browser's Privacy Checkup
Many browsers now offer a built-in privacy checkup or dashboard. This tool walks you through your current settings and helps you understand what each option does. It is a great way to review everything in one place without digging through menus.
Other Settings Worth Checking
- Clear browsing data regularly: Set your browser to clear cookies and browsing history when you close it, or do it manually every week.
- Turn off search suggestions: Some browsers send everything you type in the address bar to a server for suggestions. You can turn this off in settings.
- Review extensions: Browser extensions can access a lot of your data. Remove any you do not actively use.
- Check site permissions: Review which websites have access to your camera, microphone, and location.
A Few Minutes for Better Privacy
You do not need to change your browser or install special software. Just spending five to ten minutes in your current browser's settings can make a noticeable difference in how much of your activity is tracked online. It is one of the easiest privacy wins available.
