Clearing Your Digital Footprint

Clearing Your Digital Footprint

What Is a Digital Footprint?

Every time you create an account, post on social media, leave a review, or sign up for a newsletter, you leave a trace online. Over the years, these traces add up into a detailed profile called your digital footprint. This information can be found by employers, advertisers, scammers, and anyone else who knows where to look.

Start by Googling Yourself

The simplest way to see your digital footprint is to search for your own name. Try different combinations. Use your full name, your name plus your city, your name plus your employer. Look at the first few pages of results to see what is publicly visible. You might be surprised by what you find.

Find and Remove Old Accounts

Over the years, you have probably created accounts on services you no longer use. Each of these accounts holds your personal information and could be exposed in a future breach. Search your email for "welcome" or "confirm your account" messages to find old registrations. Then visit those sites and look for an option to delete your account entirely.

Data Broker Opt-Outs

Data brokers are companies that collect and sell personal information like your name, address, phone number, and more. Many of them are required to let you opt out and have your information removed. This process can be time-consuming, but it is effective. Search for the major data broker sites and follow their removal process.

Clean Up Social Media

Review your social media profiles and consider:

  • Removing or hiding old posts that reveal too much personal information.
  • Updating your privacy settings to limit who can see your content.
  • Removing personal details from your bio, like your phone number or exact birthday.
  • Untagging yourself from photos you do not want associated with your profile.

Managing Search Results

If you find content about yourself that you want removed from search results, most search engines offer a process for requesting removal of certain types of information. This will not remove the content from the original website, but it can make it much harder to find.

A Gradual Process

Cleaning up your digital footprint does not happen overnight, and that is okay. Start with the most sensitive items like old accounts with financial information and social media posts with personal details. Then work your way through the rest over time. Every step reduces your exposure and gives you more control over your online presence.
