Most smartphone photos contain metadata called EXIF data, which can include:

While some social media platforms strip this data when you upload, not all do. Anyone who downloads your original photo could potentially see exactly where you were.
Safer Ways to Share
You do not have to give up sharing entirely. Try these safer approaches:
- Wait until you are home: Post your vacation album after you return. You still get to share the memories without broadcasting your absence.
- Limit your audience: If you must post while away, share only with close friends using privacy settings rather than posting publicly.
- Avoid location tags: Skip the geotag and do not name your hotel or resort in the caption.
- Turn off location services: Disable GPS for your camera app to prevent metadata from being embedded in your photos.
Check Your Privacy Settings
Before your next trip, review who can see your posts on each platform. Make sure your default sharing setting is not set to public. Remove any followers or connections you do not recognize.
