Why Video Call Security Matters
Video conferencing became essential for work and personal communication. But with that popularity came new risks. Uninvited guests crashing meetings, sensitive conversations being recorded, and data being shared with third parties are all real concerns.
Taking a few simple steps can make your video calls much more private and secure.
Choosing a Secure Platform
Not all video calling apps are created equal. Look for these features:
- End-to-end encryption: This ensures only the people on the call can see and hear the conversation. Not all platforms offer this by default.
- Meeting passwords: Requiring a password prevents random people from joining your call.
- Waiting rooms: This feature lets the host approve participants before they enter the meeting.
- Clear privacy policy: Check what data the platform collects and whether it shares information with advertisers.
Before the Call
A little preparation goes a long way:
- Generate a unique meeting link for each call instead of reusing a personal meeting room.
- Only share the meeting link with intended participants through a secure channel.
- Update your video calling app to the latest version to get the newest security patches.
- Check your background. Make sure nothing sensitive like documents or whiteboards is visible.
During the Call
Once your meeting is underway, keep these tips in mind:
- Lock the meeting after all expected participants have joined.
- Be mindful of screen sharing. Only share specific windows, not your entire screen.
- Mute yourself when not speaking to avoid accidentally sharing private conversations.
- Avoid discussing highly sensitive information unless you are confident the call is encrypted.
After the Call
If the call was recorded, store the recording securely and share it only with people who need access. Delete recordings you no longer need. Review the participant list to confirm no unauthorized person joined.
Video calls are incredibly convenient, and with a few precautions, you can use them confidently without compromising your privacy.
